What is a Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) ?
The JR pass is offered by the six major rail companies that make up the Japan Railways Group (JR Group), namely the JR East, JR West, JR Central, JR Hokkaido, JR Kyushu and JR Shikoku.
These passes can only be used by foreign tourists, providing unlimited rides of JR trains for up to three weeks. It comes in 2 different types: Ordinary & Green car, with the latter offering more spacious seats than ordinary cars.
Eligibility to purchase a JR Pass
You are eligible to purchase the JR Pass if you are either:
- Holding Foreign passport & entering Japan under “Temporary Visitor“
- Japanese national living outside of Japan for more than 10 consecutive years
Do take note that we will issue you a physical exchange order which has to be turned in at any major JR stations in Japan within 3 months after issuance.
*Please obtain the stamp/sticker on your passport from a manned counter. All other entry statuses such as “Trainee”, “Entertainer” or “Reentry Permit” are not allowed to purchase the JR Pass.
^Individuals must present a copy of the “Certificate of Overseas Residence” issued by the Japanese Embassy (within last 6 months) when making the JR Pass booking.

How to Use the JR Pass
Present the relevant documents at any major JR stations & receive your Japan Rail Pass.
Make seat reservations for the sectors that you are travelling on Shinkansen or Limited Express.
Insert the JR Pass ticket through the automatic ticket gate and remember to retrieve it when passing through the gates.
Present your seat reservation tickets when train conductors check on Shinkansen and Limited Express trains.
You also have the flexibility to exchange your pass before usage date by letting the staff know your intended activation date. When making seat reservations, simply present your JR Pass to the staff and inform them of the date, time, departure & arrival stations and the trains.
Reading the details on a Japanese Train Ticket:
*Passport showing stamp with “Temporary Visitor” & physical exchange order for foreign passport holders. For Japanese passport holders, an additional document “Certificate of Overseas Residence” must be presented.
^JR Pass is not valid for any seats, reserved or non-reserved on “NOZOMI” and “MIZUHO” trains on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen. In addition, there may not be green seats available on certain routes. There are now new luggage rules for visitors travelling on the Tokaido, Sanyo & Kyushu Shinkansen.
**Gates showing IC only would not be able to accept the JR Pass ticket. Also, please avoid using seat reservation tickets to pass through the gate.
